Lights in the sky

Just a thought or two on what I saw...

I often come home at night when the stars are out. I enjoy a great view of Orion's belt, and I really appreciate being able to see the stars.

Okay, often there is a large, very bright light hanging up there. It is the largest and brightest thing in the sky, second only to the moon. I can't remember when I started to pay attention to this light, but I don't think it has always been there. Still, being human, it could have always been there.

This light was always perceived as being stationary. Hence, I thought, what planet is that? Or, could I somehow be seeing the ISS?? What is that thing? It was awfully big, and very, very bright. But, even though I thought about it every night I came in late, once I was inside, I didn't think about it.

So, a couple of days ago, I was sitting in my living room watching TV, and I happened to glance out the patio doors. I saw the light. I thought, oh, there's my old friend. Continued watching tv, and maybe ten minutes later, looked out again. The light had moved over a little bit. I had to lean over a little more to view it. That's not odd--even the moon moves--but suddenly, it shot like a bat outta hell, horizontally out of view. The movement was way beyond an aircraft. It was more like a catapult. The movement actually blurred the light.

Well, my cats have taught me to run toward danger. That's what I did, ran right to the patio door. There was not another light. That thing was GONE. I made sure my doors were locked.

Now, I live near an airport. At night, you can see the landing pattern. If you look through binoculars, you can see fairly well, distinguish how many lights on the front, strobes and stuff, on individual planes. My bogey had none of those things, so I thought it was a planetary body.

Well, tonight I saw the bright light hanging there again, so I watched it for a long time. It did not seem to be moving. I went out on the dark patio, with my nocs, and spent a long time watching this light.

The light was not stationary. It had an almost imperceptable movement. But I have landmarks to gauge by, and pretty soon I could track this thing according to its position by the landmark (an antenna). It was very slow. So, I'm thinking, it has to be a planet or something I am seeing that is in orbit.

The moon slowly recedes and goes to the right, very slowly, over a period of hours. This thing followed that same track, more or less, but quicker. This thing first moved to the right, and then appeared to be waning away. And then it winked out.

I am sure there is an explanation, something that is going to make me feel sheepish. But what the hey? Planetary bodies don't zoom away. That was just freakin weird.

If it is a planet, then I should see it in the same spot, with the same progression in the sky. Keep you posted.

Unless they get me.
